ENHANCING GENDER BALANCE IN PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONSFINAL REPORT
DPKO convened a policy dialogue with troop and police contributing countries on 28-29 March 2006 in New York. The meeting reviewed strategies for enhancing gender balance among uniformed personnel in peacekeeping missions. After two days of plenary discussions, the participants reached a broad consensus that meaningful change is possible, and that steps must be taken to increase the number of uniformed women peacekeepers if the peacekeeping agenda is to remain credible.
A summary of the discussions and the recommendations that emerged from the policy dialogue are presented in a final report, which also contains the result of a suvey undertaken to assess the numbers of women present in national military and police forces in countries contributing troops to the UN peacekeeping missions. The survey results relate to responses from 36 countries which have thus far responded.
